Rumor: Lenovo to Self-Manufacture All Computers in 3-5 Years
Sohu IT, 1/06/13
According to a number of Chinese-language computer blogs, consumer electronics manufacturer Lenovo (0992.HK) intends to self-manufacture all of the company's laptop, desktop, and all-in-one computers within the next three to five years. At present, Lenovo has concentrated much of its laptop and all-in-one manufacturing in the company's Hefei JV factory with Taiwanese consumer electronics manufacturer Compal Electronics.
According to an industry insider, excluding the company's IdeaPad consumer products, Lenovo will look to move production of one or two of its business-use ThinkPad products to Lenovo's Hefei factory in the near future. Lenovo currently plans to ship 12-15 mln laptop and desktop computers and 3 mln all-in-one computers for 2013, 40% of which will be self-manufactured.
Lenovo has yet to comment on the matter.
