China to Add 25 Mln Fixed-line Broadband Subs in 2014

Miao Wei, Minister of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), has announced the ministry's 2014 "Broadband China" development goals. In 2014, the MIIT expects to focus on the following broadband objectives:

1. Bring fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) coverage to an additional 30 mln households, with 25 mln new fixed broadband subscriber households;

2. Construct an additional 300,000 TD-LTE base stations, with TD-LTE users increasing to 30 mln;

3. Extend broadband coverage to an additional 13,800 village-level administrative areas;

4. Achieve an 8M+ broadband penetration rate of 30%, and an 8M broadband penetration rate of 40% in the central and eastern regions of China. The MIIT will encourage promotion of 50M and 100M high-speed broadband service in certain well-developed regions.

Miao also released results of 2013 Broadband China initiatives. During the year, FTTH coverage was extended to an additional 72 mln households, to reach a total of 167 mln households. Fixed broadband users increased by 19 mln to a total of 189 mln households, while 3G users grew by 169 mln to 400 mln subs. Broadband coverage was extended to an additional 19,000 administrative villages, raising China's rural broadband coverage rate from 88% in early 2013 to 91% by the end of that year. Broadband speeds of 4M or higher accounted for 79% of subs in 2013.
