Chinese B2C e-commerce platform JD.com (Nasdaq: JD) and Xi'an National Civil Aerospace Industrial Base today signed a partnership agreement covering JD.com's global logistics headquarters, unmanned systems production center, and cloud operations center, according to which the parties will create a JD.com Comprehensive Smart Logistics Industrial Base in Xi'an.
As part of the agreement, JD.com plans to invest RMB 20.5 bln over the next five years. The partnership also dovetails with JD.com's plan to create "three headquarters, three platforms, and four industries." These include headquarters for global logistics, global unmanned systems, and cloud big data operations; platforms for integrated smart logistics, flight operations management, and big data operations; and services for smart manufacturing, smart logistics, cloud computing, and developing small towns in connection with the Chinese government's "small towns with special characteristics" program.
JD.com will make use of the Xi'an National Civil Aerospace Industrial Base's technology, real estate assets, and talent resources to create a smart logistics industry center which will integrate warehousing, delivery, accounting, big data, and cloud computing services.
The parties plan to form a JD.com unmanned systems development team before the end of 2017, and will gradually develop pilot systems for unmanned aircraft, driverless cars, and unmanned warehouse systems. JD.com will also form a wholly owned subsidiary within the Industrial Base to perform management, operations, and investment functions for the unmanned systems development team, and to set up an industrial-grade unmanned aircraft development and production base spanning development, production, control, and data analysis.
JD.com will also set up a smart city ecosystem based on cloud technology and big data, including platform, data, ecosystem, and network system elements.
