Shanghai's 4G Penetration Drops to 88% in February 2020 as 5G Adoption Rises
MIIT, 3/19/20
China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released statistics detailing the country's total number of fixed-line telephone subscribers (registered accounts) and mobile subscribers by province as of the end of February 2020. China finished the month with just under 190 mln fixed-line subs and slightly less than 1.580 bln mobile subs.
The five provinces with the highest penetration of 4G users among their respective mobile subscriber bases were Shanghai with 88.3%, followed by Guangdong (87.7%), Tibet (84.6%), Qinghai (83.1%), and Guangxi (82.9%). The provinces with the lowest 4G penetration were Xinjiang (54.0%), Shandong (75.5%), Yunnan (75.9%), Heilongjiang (76.2%), and Jilin (76.9%). The MIIT did not break out figures for 5G subscriber totals or penetration rates, but following the November 2019 launch of 5G services by all three of China's main telecom operators, 4G penetration rates in cities like Shanghai have begun to drop.
