Alibaba Developing Neural Network Chip

Tencent Tech, 4/19/18

Chinese internet conglomerate Alibaba Group's (NYSE: BABA) R&D institute, the DAMO Academy, recently revealed that it is working on a neural network-based chip, called "Ali-NPU," specialized for artificial intelligence calculations such as image and video processing and machine learning.

Ali-NPU's design performance will be 10 times greater than AI chips built on mainstream CPU/GPU architectures, according to Jiao Yang, a researcher at DAMO Academy. The chip's cost and power consumption will only be half, given the Ali-NPU is expected to have an overall performance to price advantage 40 times that of its competitors. Alibaba Cloud Computing will adopt Ali-NPU giving an advantage to every industry that utilizes its cloud services.
