JD.com to Launch Unmanned Smart Restaurant in August

IT Home, 5/29/18

Xiao Jun, CEO at Chinese B2C e-commerce platform JD.com's (Nasdaq: JD) "JD X" business division, recently said that the company will launch a new smart restaurant called "Joy's" in August, which will include unmanned services for food ordering, preparation, and serving. Joy's will offer food prepared by a chef robot that can create more than 50 delicious dishes covering eight different types of cuisine. By 2020, JD.com plans to open up access to its restaurant technologies and exclusive recipes to support more than 1,000 franchise restaurant outlets throughout China.

Editor's Note: In January 2018, JD.com rival Alibaba Group (NYSE: BABA), via affiliate Koubei, officially launched its first unmanned restaurant in Hangzhou. For more information on this topic, please see Alibaba's Koubei Launches First Unmanned Restaurant in Hangzhou, MD 1/25/18 issue.
