Baidu Secures Approval to Manage '.Baidu' Domain

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) recently authorized Chinese internet conglomerate Baidu (Nasdaq: BIDU) to serve as manager for the ".Baidu" top-level Internet domain name. Baidu will be responsible for operating, maintaining, and managing the ".Baidu" top-level domain server over the next five years.

MIIT said that Baidu should formulate and maintain management rules for the .Baidu domain and make this information available to the public. Baidu is also expected to set up mechanisms for domain name registrar management and for maintaining records related to registration service agencies. Baidu must also provide domain name registration information and query services to the public and must record and retain identification information for domain registrants.
