Chinese Regulator Asks Shanghai Authorities to Investigate Piracy Claims against Pinduoduo

China's State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) recently announced that it has asked the Shanghai Administration for Industry and Commerce to meet with group buy app operator Pinduoduo (Nasdaq: PDD), following recent media reports of significant numbers of counterfeit and pirated products being sold through the platform. The SAMR said that it has asked the Shanghai city government and other local industry, commerce and market regulators to conduct a thorough investigation into media reports and consumer and trademark-holder complaints regarding the sale of pirated products and brands through Pinduoduo, and to deal seriously with any legal violations attributable to third-party platform operators or merchants operating through the platform.
