Taobao Launches Mobile Gaming Platform to Compete with WeChat Mini Games

Alibaba Group's (NYSE: BABA) C2C e-commerce site Taobao has now been operating a mobile mini games platform for approximately two months, according to online media outlet 36Kr.com, indicating that the platform is more than just a distribution channel for Alibaba Games' Chinese version of Japanese mobile casual game Travel Frog, but a mini games platform similar to WeChat's in-app games platform.
Taobao's mini games channel is hidden deeply within the platform's Taobao coins system and can be accessed by clicking on the "Taojin bi" (Taobao coins) menu item on the Mobile Taobao homepage and selecting "play games." Users can complete game tasks to earn prizes such as Taobao coin shopping coupons.
The Taobao coins games platform currently has 16 mini games, most of which are light two-player games and simple level-based games such as matching puzzle game Lianliankan and strategy board game Gomoku (Five in a Row). Games feature support for voice-based controls and display the avatar and ID of players during two-player games. Users can also engage in light social interaction through the gaming platform.
