Alibaba's UCWeb to Invest RMB 500 Mln to Support Original Content Creation
TechWeb, 9/13/18
Alibaba Group's (NYSE: BABA) UCWeb subsidiary, operator of mobile browser UC Browser, recently announced a "U Creator Plan" to encourage the production of premium original content. UCWeb will invest RMB 500 mln in cash across the 2018-2019 financial year to build a content ecosystem as continued propping up and investments in content creators and long-term cultivation of cutting edge original authors, according to Wu Jia, general manager of UCWeb's domestic business under the umbrella of Alibaba Digital Media and Entertainment Group.
UCWeb will provide financial support to premium content in three ways. First, UCWeb will attack accounts with poor quality content and plagiarism through penalties and requirements of original exclusivity. UCWeb has closed nearly 40,000 accounts and removed 410,000 articles in the past year. Second, UCWeb will create a multivariate profit-sharing model that takes comprehensive click volume, reading time, subscription numbers, number of comments, and negative feedback into account. Finally, UCWeb will diversify its awards revenue to provide rich opportunities to compete for additional earnings. Apart from rewarding highest rated authors and best-new writers, UCWeb will design niche awards covering different categories and a special award for essays submitted on trending topics.
