China's Domestic Handset Market Sees 5 Mln 5G Shipments in Nov 2019

A total of 34.84 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in November 2019, down 1.5% YoY and 3.1% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Of total shipments in November, 5.07 mln were 5G handsets, 28.30 mln were 4G handsets, and 1.47 mln were 2G handsets.
In the 11-month period from Jan-Nov 2019, a total of 358.2 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 5.4% YoY. Of this total, 8.36 mln were 5G handsets, 335.1 mln were 4G handsets, 58,000 were 3G handsets, and 14.7 mln were 2G handsets.
A total of 31.39 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in November, up 2.7% YoY, accounting for 90.1% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 33.37 mln, up 0.2% YoY and accounting for 95.8%, of total handsets shipped in China in November. Of total smartphone shipments during the month, 91.3% were Android-based smartphones.
In the 11-month period from Jan-Nov 2019, 325.9 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 3.8% YoY, accounting for 91.0% of total handset shipments. During the same 11-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 342.7 mln, or 95.7%, of total handsets shipped in China. Of total smartphone shipments during the period, 91.4% were Android-based smartphones.
During the month of November, 56 new handset models were released in China, of which 4 were 5G models, 31 were 4G models and 21 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released in November, 34, or 60.7%, were smartphone models. In the 11-month period from Jan-Nov 2019, 538 new handset models were released in China, down 25.5% YoY; of this total, 24 were 5G models, 382 were 4G models, 1 was a 3G model, and 131 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Nov 2019, 397, or 73.8%, were smartphone models, of which 390, or 98.2%, were Android models.
Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or "shanzhai" handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
