China's February 2020 Domestic Handset Shipments Down 56% YoY

A total of 6.38 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in February 2020, down 56.0% YoY and 69.3% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Of total shipments in February, 2.38 mln were 5G handsets, 3.96 mln were 4G handsets, and 43,000 were 2G handsets.

In the 2-month period from Jan-Feb 2020, a total of 27.20 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 44.0% YoY. Of this total, 7.85 mln were 5G handsets, 18.96 mln were 4G handsets, and 0.39 mln were 2G handsets.

A total of 5.86 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in February, down 55.3% YoY and 68.0% MoM, accounting for 91.8% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 6.34 mln, down 54.7% YoY and 68.9% MoM, and accounting for 99.3% of total handsets shipped in China in February. Of total smartphone shipments during the month, 92.2% were Android-based smartphones.

In the 2-month period from Jan-Feb 2020, 24.18 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 46.5% YoY, accounting for 88.9% of total handset shipments. During the same 2-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 26.71 mln, or 98.2%, of total handsets shipped in China. Of total smartphone shipments during the period, 89.5% were Android-based smartphones.

During the month of February, 16 new handset models were released in China, of which 11 were 5G models, 4 were 4G models and 1 was a 2G model. Of the total new handset models released in February, 14, or 87.5%, were smartphone models. In the 2-month period from Jan-Feb 2020, 50 new handset models were released in China, down 31.5% YoY; of this total, 19 were 5G models, 22 were 4G models, and 9 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Feb 2020, 40, or 80.0%, were smartphone models, of which all were Android models.

Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or "shanzhai" handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
