China's March 2020 Domestic Handset Shipments Down 23% YoY, Up 241% MoM

A total of 21.76 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in March 2020, down 23.3% YoY but up 240.8% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Of total shipments in March, 6.22 mln were 5G handsets, 14.84 mln were 4G handsets, and 698,000 were 2G handsets.

In the 3-month period from Jan-Mar 2020, a total of 48.95 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 36.4% YoY. Of this total, 14.06 mln were 5G handsets, 33.81 mln were 4G handsets, and 1.09 mln were 2G handsets.

A total of 18.88 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in March, down 26.5% YoY but up 222.2% MoM, accounting for 86.8% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 21.03 mln, down 21.9% YoY but up 231.6% MoM, and accounting for 96.7% of total handsets shipped in China in March. Of total smartphone shipments during the month, 87.9% were Android-based smartphones.

In the 3-month period from Jan-Mar 2020, 43.05 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 39.2% YoY, accounting for 87.9% of total handset shipments. During the same 3-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 47.74 mln, or 97.5%, of total handsets shipped in China. Of total smartphone shipments during the period, 88.8% were Android-based smartphones.

During the month of March, 39 new handset models were released in China, of which 24 were 5G models, 11 were 4G models and 4 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released in March, 34, or 87.2%, were smartphone models. In the 3-month period from Jan-Mar 2020, 89 new handset models were released in China, down 28.8% YoY; of this total, 43 were 5G models, 33 were 4G models, and 13 were 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Mar 2020, 74, or 83.1%, were smartphone models, of which all were Android models.

Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or "shanzhai" handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
