China's October 2021 Domestic Handset Shipments Up 28% YoY, 57% MoM

A total of 33.58 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in October 2021, up 28.4% YoY, and 56.6% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Of total shipments in October, 26.59 mln, or 79.2%, were 5G handsets, 6.47 mln, or 19.3%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 0.52 mln, or 1.5%, were 3G and 2G handsets.

In the 10-month period from Jan-Oct 2021, a total of 282.09 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, up 12.0% YoY. Of this total, 210.03 mln, or 74.5%, were 5G handsets, 68.55 mln, or 24.3%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 3.51 mln, or 1.2%, were 3G and 2G handsets.

A total of 22.81 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in October, up 12.2% YoY and 12.5% MoM, accounting for 67.9% of total handset shipments. While domestic handset brands have comprised between 84% to 96% of monthly handset shipments in China so far this year, the launch of Apple's iPhone 13 in late September put downward pressure on this figure in October. Shipments of smartphones comprised 32.68 mln, up 30.6% YoY and 57.0% MoM, and accounting for 97.3% of total handsets shipped in China in October.

In the 10-month period from Jan-Oct 2021, 247.04 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, up 9.2% YoY, accounting for 87.6% of total handset shipments. During the same 10-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 275.29 mln, or 97.6%, of total handsets shipped in China.

During the month of October, 26 new handset models were released in China, of which 16, or 61.5%, were 5G models, and 10, or 38.5%, were 4G models. Of the total new handset models released during the month, 25, or 96.2%, were from domestic brands, and 25, or 96.2%, were smartphone models.

In the 10-month period from Jan-Oct 2021, 380 new handset models were released in China, up 0.3% YoY; of this total, 188, or 49.5%, were 5G models, 181, or 47.6%, were 4G models, and the remaining 11, or 2.9%, were 3G and 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Oct 2021, 345, or 90.8%, were from domestic brands, and 325, or 85.5%, were smartphone models.

Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or knock-off handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
