China's November 2022 Domestic Handset Shipments Down 34% YoY, 5% MoM

A total of 23.24 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in November 2022, down 34.1% YoY and 4.6% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Of total shipments in November, 17.92 mln, or 77.1%, were 5G handsets, 5.17 mln, or 22.2%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 0.15 mln, or 0.6%, were 3G and 2G handsets.
In the 11-month period from Jan-Nov 2022, a total of 243.65 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 23.2% YoY. Of this total, 190.72 mln, or 78.3%, were 5G handsets, 50.87 mln, or 20.9%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 2.07 mln, or 0.8%, were 3G and 2G handsets.
A total of 20.11 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in November, down 28.3% YoY, but up 19.6% MoM, accounting for 86.5% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 22.22 mln units, down 36.2% YoY and 6.6% MoM, and accounting for 95.6% of total handsets shipped in China in November.
In the 11-month period from Jan-Nov 2022, 206.58 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 24.9% YoY, accounting for 84.8% of total handset shipments. During the same 11-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 236.90 mln, or 97.2%, of total handsets shipped in China.
During the month of November, 43 new handset models were released in China, down 8.5% YoY, but up 30.3% MoM. Of the total new handset models released during the month, 26, or 60.5%, were 5G models, 17, or 39.5%, were 4G models, and none were 3G or 2G models; 38, or 88.4%, of the new handset models were from domestic brands, and 37, or 86.0%, were smartphone models.
In the 11-month period from Jan-Nov 2022, 381 new handset models were released in China, down 10.8% YoY; of this total, 202, or 53.0%, were 5G models, 170, or 44.6%, were 4G models, and 9, or 2.4%, were 3G or 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Nov 2022, 346, or 90.8%, were from domestic brands, and 318, or 83.5%, were smartphone models.

Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or knock-off handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
