China's December 2022 Domestic Handset Shipments Down 17% YoY, Up 20% MoM

A total of 27.86 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in December 2022, down 16.6% YoY, but up 19.9% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Of total shipments in December, 23.23 mln, or 83.4%, were 5G handsets, 4.47 mln, or 16.0%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 0.16 mln, or 0.6%, were 3G and 2G handsets.
In the 12-month period from Jan-Dec 2022, a total of 271.51 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 22.6% YoY. Of this total, 213.95 mln, or 78.8%, were 5G handsets, 55.34 mln, or 20.4%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 2.22 mln, or 0.8%, were 3G and 2G handsets.
A total of 21.98 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in December, down 22.8% YoY, but up 9.3% MoM, accounting for 78.9% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 26.84 mln units, down 17.9% YoY, but up 20.8% MoM, and accounting for 96.3% of total handsets shipped in China in December.
In the 12-month period from Jan-Dec 2022, 228.57 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 24.7% YoY, accounting for 84.2% of total handset shipments. During the same 12-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 263.74 mln, or 97.1%, of total handsets shipped in China.
During the month of December, 42 new handset models were released in China, down 25.0% YoY and 2.3% MoM. Of the total new handset models released during the month, 18, or 42.9%, were 5G models, 24, or 57.1%, were 4G models, and none were 3G or 2G models; 40, or 95.2%, of the new handset models were from domestic brands, and 33, or 78.6%, were smartphone models.
In the 12-month period from Jan-Dec 2022, 423 new handset models were released in China, down 12.4% YoY; of this total, 220, or 52.0%, were 5G models, 194, or 45.9%, were 4G models, and 9, or 2.1%, were 3G or 2G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Dec 2022, 386, or 91.3%, were from domestic brands, and 351, or 83.0%, were smartphone models.
Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or knock-off handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
