Alibaba's Tmall to Launch New Online Direct Sales Platform 'Maoxiang'
LatePost, 2/16/22
The B2C Retail Business Group of Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group (NYSE: BABA; 9988.HK) will soon update its Tmall B2C marketplace app to add self-operated direct sales stores, reports Chinese local media LatePost. The new self-operated flagship stores will focus on big brands, starting with the 3C category. The update will be officially launched in the near future through an upgrade of the Tmall mobile app, which will be rebranded as "Maoxiang".
Although the products offered on Maoxiang's self-operated flagship stores and Tmall's official flagship stores overlap, their supply sources and operating models are different. The ownership of the goods in Tmall's official flagship stores still belongs to the brand, and the brand ships directly to consumers; the ownership of the goods in Maoxiang's self-operated flagship stores belongs to the platform, which purchases the goods directly from the brand, and then ships directly to consumers.
The Maoxiang project started towards the end of 2021 under the oversight of Zhao Kun, director of the Future Clients for Customer division at Alibaba, a department formed in October 2021 through the integration of Kaola (a cross-border membership e-commerce platform under Alibaba) and Tmall's mobile unit.
