China's February 2025 Domestic Handset Shipments Up 38% YoY, Down 28% MoM

A total of 19.66 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in February 2025, up 37.9% YoY, but down 27.8% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Of total shipments in February, 17.98 mln, or 91.5%, were 5G handsets, and the remaining 1.68 mln, or 8.5%, were 4G handsets.

In the 2-month period from Jan-Feb 2025, a total of 46.91 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, up 1.9% YoY. Of this total, 41.62 mln, or 88.7%, were 5G handsets, and 5.28 mln, or 11.3%, were 4G handsets.

A total of 17.02 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in February, up 43.8% YoY, but down 25.5% MoM, accounting for 86.6% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 18.61 mln units, up 32.5% YoY, but down 24.1% MoM, accounting for 94.6% of total handsets shipped in China in February.

In the 2-month period from Jan-Feb 2025, 39.87 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, up 4.7% YoY, accounting for 85.0% of total handset shipments. During the same 2-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 43.11 mln, or 91.9%, of total handsets shipped in China.

During the month of February, 13 new handset models were released in China, down 43.5% YoY and 63.9% MoM. Of the total new handset models released during the month, 9, or 69.2%, were 5G models, and 4, or 30.8%, were 4G models; 100%, of the new handset models were from domestic brands, and 11, or 84.6%, were smartphone models.

In the 2-month period from Jan-Feb 2025, 49 new handset models were released in China, down 9.3% YoY; of this total, 30, or 61.2%, were 5G models, and 19, or 38.8%, were 4G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-Feb 2025, 48, or 98.0%, were from domestic brands, and 36, or 73.5%, were smartphone models.

Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or knock-off handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
