China's June 2025 Domestic Handset Shipments Down 9% YoY, 5% MoM

A total of 22.60 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in June 2025, down 9.3% YoY and 4.7% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Of total shipments in June, 18.44 mln, or 81.6%, were 5G handsets, 4.16 mln, or 18.4%, were 4G handsets, and none were 3G and 2G handsets. Note that CAICT breaks out shipment figures only for 5G and 4G models, to the nearest 1,000 units and 10,000 units, respectively.
In the 6-month period from Jan-Jun 2025, a total of 141.02 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 3.9% YoY. Of this total, 120.56 mln, or 85.5%, were 5G handsets, 20.43 mln, or 14.5%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 36,000, or less than 0.1%, were 3G and 2G handsets.
A total of 20.63 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in June, down 6.4% YoY but up 7.6% MoM, accounting for 91.3% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 20.56 mln units, down 13.8% YoY and 8.7% MoM, accounting for 91.0% of total handsets shipped in China in June.
In the 6-month period from Jan-Jun 2025, 122.07 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, down 1.3% YoY, accounting for 86.6% of total handset shipments. During the same 6-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 129.92 mln, or 92.1%, of total handsets shipped in China.
During the month of June, 36 new handset models were released in China, up 28.6% YoY but down 7.7% MoM. Of the total new handset models released during the month, 8, or 22.2%, were 5G models, and 28, or 77.8%, were 4G models; 34, or 94.4%, of the new handset models were from domestic brands, and 10, or 27.8%, were smartphone models.
In the 6-month period from Jan-Jun 2025, 238 new handset models were released in China, up 10.2% YoY; of this total, 103, or 43.3%, were 5G models, and 135, or 56.7%, were 4G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-June 2025, 226, or 95.0%, were from domestic brands, and 153, or 64.3%, were smartphone models.
Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or knock-off handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
