China's July 2025 Domestic Handset Shipments Up 16% YoY, 24% MoM

A total of 28.09 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in July 2025, up 16.1% YoY and 24.3% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Of total shipments in July, 22.62 mln, or 80.5%, were 5G handsets, 5.47 mln, or 19.5%, were 4G handsets, and none were 3G and 2G handsets. Note that CAICT breaks out shipment figures only for 5G and 4G models, to the nearest 1,000 units and 10,000 units, respectively.
In the 7-month period from Jan-Jul 2025, a total of 169.12 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, down 1.1% YoY. Of this total, 143.18 mln, or 84.7%, were 5G handsets, 25.90 mln, or 15.3%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 36,000, or less than 0.1%, were 3G and 2G handsets.
A total of 25.35 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in July, up 16.1% YoY and 22.9% MoM, accounting for 90.2% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 24.45 mln units, up 10.3% YoY and 19.0% MoM, accounting for 87.0% of total handsets shipped in China in July.
In the 7-month period from Jan-Jul 2025, 147.41 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, up 1.3% YoY, accounting for 87.2% of total handset shipments. During the same 7-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 154.37 mln, or 91.3%, of total handsets shipped in China.
During the month of July, 48 new handset models were released in China, up 65.5% YoY and 33.3% MoM. Of the total new handset models released during the month, 23, or 47.9%, were 5G models, and 25, or 52.1%, were 4G models; 45, or 93.8%, of the new handset models were from domestic brands, and 28, or 58.3%, were smartphone models.
In the 7-month period from Jan-Jul 2025, 286 new handset models were released in China, up 16.7% YoY; of this total, 126, or 44.1%, were 5G models, and 160, or 55.9%, were 4G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-July 2025, 271, or 94.8%, were from domestic brands, and 181, or 63.3%, were smartphone models.
Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or knock-off handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
