China's October 2025 Domestic Handset Shipments Up 9% YoY, 16% MoM

A total of 32.27 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China in October 2025, up 8.7% YoY and 15.5% MoM, according to new figures released by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT), a department of China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).
Of total shipments in October, 29.33 mln, or 90.9%, were 5G handsets, 2.94 mln, or 9.1%, were 4G handsets, and fewer than 10,000 were 3G and 2G handsets. Note that CAICT breaks out shipment figures only for 5G and 4G models, to the nearest 1,000 units and 10,000 units, respectively.
In the 10-month period from Jan-Oct 2025, a total of 251.92 mln mobile handsets were shipped in China, up 0.8% YoY. Of this total, 216.60 mln, or 86.0%, were 5G handsets, 35.25 mln, or 14.0%, were 4G handsets, and the remaining 62,000, or less than 0.1%, were 3G and 2G handsets.
A total of 25.24 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China in October, up 7.6% YoY and 6.8% MoM, accounting for 78.2% of total handset shipments. Shipments of smartphones comprised 31.36 mln units, up 12.4% YoY and 22.4% MoM, accounting for 97.2% of total handsets shipped in China in October.
In the 10-month period from Jan-Oct 2025, 217.59 mln handsets from domestic handset brands were shipped in China, up 2.9% YoY, accounting for 86.4% of total handset shipments. During the same 10-month period, shipments of smartphones comprised 232.99 mln, or 92.5%, of total handsets shipped in China.
During the month of October, 45 new handset models were released in China, up 9.8% YoY, but down 4.3% MoM. Of the total new handset models released during the month, 19, or 42.2%, were 5G models, and 26, or 57.8%, were 4G models; 43, or 95.6%, of the new handset models were from domestic brands, and 26, or 57.8%, were smartphone models.
In the 10-month period from Jan-Oct 2025, 443 new handset models were released in China, up 19.4% YoY; of this total, 199, or 44.9%, were 5G models, and 244, or 55.1%, were 4G models. Of the total new handset models released from Jan-October 2025, 421, or 95.0%, were from domestic brands, and 285, or 64.3%, were smartphone models.
Editor's Note: CAICT's statistics cover domestically produced, domestically shipped handsets from both Chinese and foreign brands, but do not include imported handsets or exports of domestically produced units. Only handsets shipped through official channels are included, meaning grey market or knock-off handsets are not covered in CAICT's figures. "Shipped" means only that the manufacturer shipped the handset to a wholesaler or retailer, where it may or may not have been sold to a consumer during the month under discussion.
