China Mobile, Telecom Announce September 2008 Subscriber Totals

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) and China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) have announced their subscriber totals for September 2008.
China Mobile added 7.25 mln new subs to reach 436.1 mln. Of the total new mobile subs added in September (7.89 mln between China Mobile and China Unicom), China Mobile took 92%, bringing its share of China's total mobile user base to 71.7%.
China Telecom suffered a net loss of approximately 630,000 fixed-line subs in September, dropping its total to 213.0 mln. Broken down by sub-category, the total was comprised of 50 mln PHS subscribers (down 2 mln since June 30), 15.7 mln public phone lines (down 110,000 since June 30), 120 mln residential lines (down 690,000 since June 30), and 27.4 mln government and business lines (up 900,000 since June 30). China Telecom added 730,000 new broadband subscribers for a total of 42.2 mln.
