GAPP: Chinese Online Gaming Market Grows 50% in 2008

Sina Tech, 12/15/08

Deputy director Kou Xiaowei of the General Administration of Press and Publication's (GAPP) Department of Audio, Video, Electronic and Network Publication Administration predicted last week that China's online gaming market will grow by more than 50% in 2008. According to GAPP's "2007 Survey Report of China's Gaming Industry", in 2007, the market was worth RMB 10.57 bln, which means the 2008 market would be expected to reach over RMB 15 bln.

GAPP's 2007 report put China's total number of gamers in 2007 at 40.17 mln, up 23% on 2006, and predicted that by 2012 the figure will reach 84.56 mln, with sales revenue of 26.23 bln.

Kou stated that because GAPP was still working on final analysis for its ‘2008 Survey Report of China's Gaming Industry', it could not provide any more detailed figures at this time.
