Sohu Fined RMB 15K for Copyright Infringement

CIEN, 12/16/08

Beijing Haidian District People's Court has ordered Sohu (Nasdaq: SOHU) to compensate digital video content provider Netmovie for economic losses of RMB 15,000 stemming from the unauthorized broadcasting of the movie "Linger". The prosecuting lawyer stated that this case was just the beginning, alleging that there was evidence showing Sohu to have broadcast 37 television series without permission from the copyright owner and warning that Sohu will face further copyright infringement proceedings in the near future.

Editor's Note: Netmovie filed the case against Sohu in May 2008. For more background on this topic, please see "Netmovie Sues Sohu for Infringement" MD 5/05/08 issue.
