Baofeng Loses Copyright Infringement Case

National Business Daily, 12/18/08

Beijing No.1 Intermediate People's Court has found media player developer Baofeng guilty of copyright infringement for providing unauthorized access to downloads of RealPlayer computer program components through its Baofeng Media Player. The court ruled that the Baofeng Media Player application provided components to its users without obtaining permission from RealPlayer, and ordered Baofeng to cease all infringing activities, publish a statement to help diminish the impact of its illegal activity, and compensate RealPlayer for economic losses of RMB 200,000. Dissatisfied with the court's decision, Baofeng stated it plans to appeal the ruling.

Baofeng began operations in 2006 and currently has 25 mln active users.
