TD-SCDMA/CMMB Handsets to Win Network Access Permits

ChinaByte, 12/25/08

An industry source has stated that China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has lifted its ban on CMMB-enabled TD-SCDMA handsets. For other standards with CMMB functionality, however, MIIT stated that it will place increased focus on network testing.

Both Hisense (600060.SH) and Yulong's Coolpad have already obtained network access permits for their TD-SCDMA/ CMMB handsets, while handset models from companies such as Lenovo Mobile, TCL Communication Technology (2618.HK), Samsung, and LG Electronics are all currently undergoing network testing. Network testing is also underway for the following handset models: UTStarcom's (Nasdaq: UTSI) S68, Haier HT-TV001, Eastcom's (600776.SH) EZ388, Gionee TD96, and ZTE's (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) U728.

Editor's Note: In preparation for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the MIIT issued special network access permits for a limited volume – 40,100 units in total - of TD-SCDMA/CMMB handsets.
