CECC: 2009 China Flat-Screen TV Demand to Exceed 18 Mln Units

China Electronics Chamber of Commerce (CECC) deputy secretary general Liu Renbo has predicted that Chinese domestic demand for flat-screen televisions in 2009 will reach 18 mln units, surpassing an estimated 15 mln units in 2008. He also forecasts that consumer demand for flat-screen televisions in H2 2009 will surpass H1 2009, and full-year 2009 sales volume will increase 47% over the full-year 2008 figure.
Editor's Note: China's government has recently launched several policies to simultaneously stimulate consumer spending and encourage consumer adoption of advanced information technology (which, in turn, is expected to stimulate demand for various related services, improve national efficiency, and extend government reach). The national rural consumer electronics subsidy program is meant to boost purchasing power in third- and fourth-tier cities. The "Old for New" program, which began in 9 provinces and municipalities (such as Beijing and Tianjin) this May, is intended to boost purchasing power in first- and second-tier cities. These programs are helping drive the robust growth projected for flat-screen TV sets this year, as well as for other products such a mobile phones.
