Rumor: China Mobile to Tap Taiwan WiMAX for TD-LTE
Tencent Tech, 3/23/10
Taiwanese media report that China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) VP Sha Yuejia will visit Taiwan in the near future to visit WiMAX operator Tatung InfoComm, equipment makers Gemtek, ZyXEL, and Accton, and chipmaker Via. The purpose of Sha's trip is to better understand Taiwan's WiMAX industry, to integrate it with the mainland's TD-LTE supply chain, and to make a large number of procurement orders. Chips, mobile handsets, GPON, and IP STB are major focuses of this round of procurements.
Sha and China Mobile Research Institute director Bill Huang will reportedly arrive in Taiwan on April 6. Sha Yuejia's first stop on the trip will be a visit to Taiwanese 3G operator Vibo Telecom for discussion of joint TD-LTE planning.
The planned trip calls for Sha to make his first visits to Taiwanese network equipment operators. An industry source said that the technical foundation of WiMAX, developed in Taiwan over the past five years, has caught Sha's attention, and Sha hopes that the technical knowledge gained from the process can be rapidly integrated into TD-LTE products. Taiwanese manufacturers may in future consider the possibility of setting up LTE and TD-LTE product lines.
