Rumor: OpenV Closes Site in Face of Infringement Suits

TechWeb, 9/25/10

Online video company OpenV will be changing its name in order to avoid paying approximately RMB 12 mln in compensation in a copyright infringement case, according to an industry source. When pressed for details the source stated that no further information could be given at this time. The OpenV website (openv.com) has already been shut down and there has been no announcement regarding when it will resume operations.

A source inside the company has indicated that changing the name of the legal entity was the only means for the company to "save itself," and avoid a pending verdict from the Beijing Chaoyang District People's Court involving a large number of film and television copyright violations, further stating that, "as the trial nears completion, total penalties are approaching RMB 12 mln. Claimants include China International Television Corporation, China Central Television (CCTV), Hunan Satellite TV, Shanghai Interactive TV (SiTV), Huayi Brothers Group (300027.SZ), Beijing Galloping Horse Group, and Orange Sky Entertainment Group, among others."

Another source close to OpenV revealed that all non-essential employees have been placed on vacation leave, and have yet to be notified when they will return to work.

Editor's Note: In an interview with Sina Tech, a spokesperson for OpenV refused to respond to the rumors, claiming the shut down is simply due to a major server breakdown and the website will be back online in one or two days.
