Rumor: VIA Testing New EV-DO Chipset

Netease Tech, 11/02/10

Taiwanese chipset and CPU manufacturer VIA Technologies has reportedly begun trial handset production with Chinese manufacturers. The trials, which involve Haier, Shenzhen LT Mobile Communication, and Hisense (600060.SH), are part of efforts to get VIA's CDMA2000 EV-DO chips on the Chinese market as soon as possible, according to a source at a handset solutions firm. The source said the chipset solution may cost the vendor as much as USD 25, while Qualcomm's QSC6085 single-chip solution costs approximately USD 33. The Qualcomm QSC6085 is one of the industry's less expensive solutions, with total unit production cost of a handset based on this solution coming to roughly RMB 350. Unit cost for production of a handset using VIA's EV-DO 3G chipset will reach approximately RMB 290.

VIA Technologies has yet to confirm the rumor.
