Rumor: Alibaba Purchases Domain for Mobile Services

DoNews, 11/03/10

An industry source claims that Hangzhou-based e-commerce company Alibaba Group has purchased the domain name Lianpu.com. Details of the transaction were unavailable, but Whois information for the domain indicates that it is owned by an individual named Li Zhiguo. According to the source, Li Zhiguo was Alibaba's VP of technology before his departure from the company in September.

The source said Li had "resurfaced" this month to help negotiate the transfer of the domain from the original owner to Alibaba. Alibaba reportedly plans to use the domain for mobile internet services.

Alibaba would not confirm the reports.
