China Unicom, Huawei Partner on Qualcomm-Powered Smartphone

Sohu IT, 8/13/12

China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) and Huawei subsidiary Huawei Device joined Qualcomm on August 13 to announce the Huawei G330D, a strategic dual-core smartphone offering from the Chinese telecom equipment and terminal manufacturer. China Unicom will offer contract subsidies for the handset under which subscribers who sign a two-year contract at monthly plan rates of RMB 96 or above and pre-pay RMB 1,399 can receive the handset for free.

The Huawei G330D features a next-generation dual-core 1 GHz Snapdragon MSM8225 (S4 Snapdragon) mobile CPU from Qualcomm and supports dual-SIM, dual-standby WCDMA+GSM connectivity. The Android 4.0 handset features a 24-bit 4" HD IPS display and front- and rear-facing 0.3-megapixel and 5-megapixel cameras, as well as special features including five-second boot to home screen, two-hour rapid charging, and Cloud+ cloud sync services.

Zhou Youmeng, GM of China Unicom's marketing and sales division, said that since the operator began launching "redefined RMB 1,000 3G smartphones" in June 2011, specifications have gone from 600 MHz phones with 3.5" screens to 1 GHz single-core phones with 4" screens, and that the industry chain is now moving to make dual-core 1 GHz phones the new standard. More than 20 mln RMB 1,000 smartphones with 1 GHz processors and 4" displays have been shipped over the past year, Zhou said.
