MIIT Announces March 2013 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its Q1 2013 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the three months were as follows:

Telecom operating revenues for the first quarter 2013 were RMB 314.86 bln (USD 50.62 bln), up 10.7% YoY, among which, core services revenue was RMB 273.05 bln (USD 43.90 bln), up 9.1% YoY. Broken down by mobile and fixed-line core service revenue, mobile telecom revenue was RMB 200.42 bln, up 10.7% YoY; and fixed line telecom revenue was RMB 72.64 bln, up 4.8% YoY, of which broadband revenue was RMB 30.97 bln, up 8.0% YoY.

Of total telecom core services revenue, non-voice revenue was RMB 145.84 bln, up 16.8% YoY. Voice revenue was 127.22 bln, up 1.3% YoY, of which mobile voice revenue was RMB 113.02 bln, up 3.1% YoY, and fixed-line voice revenue was RMB 14.2 bln, down 10.9% YoY. Mobile data and internet revenue was RMB 39.71 bln, up 56.2% YoY.

Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 12.76 mln in March to reach 1.422 bln. Mobile subscribers grew by 13.68 mln to 1.146 bln, while fixed-line subscribers decreased by 917,000 to 276.41 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscriber base declined by 528,000 to 265.02 mln, while the PHS subscriber base decreased by 389,000 subs to 11.39 mln. In March, 17.35 mln new 3G subscribers were added to reach a total 3G user base of 277.27 mln.

A total of 232.14 bln SMS messages were sent from January to March, a 0.5% increase YoY.

In terms of Internet access, China added 2.56 mln new registered broadband users in March to reach a total of 181.47 mln. 4M and higher broadband subs reached 125 mln, accounting for 68.9% of all broadband subs. FTTH subs grew to 24.99 mln, accounting for 13.8% of all broadband subs. Dial-up internet subs declined by 22,000 in March, reducing the total dial-up user base to 5.69 mln. Mobile Internet subscribers grew by 13.94 mln in March to reach a total of 817.39 mln.
