Rumor: Alibaba to Release Internet TV Set-Top Box

Sina Tech, 5/15/13

According to an industry source, Chinese e-commerce conglomerate Alibaba Group's Alibaba Cloud Computing ("AliCloud") subsidiary plans to release an internet TV set-top box (STB), called "AliBox" (unofficial translation), allowing multi-screen interaction and online shopping through users' TV sets.

Alibaba is said to have begun R&D on the STB in the last half of 2012, and will possibly work with Hangzhou-based DTV and IPTV operator Wasu Digital Television Media Group or Hunan province TV media operator Hunan Broadcasting System (HBS) to release the product in the near future.

Alibaba has made no comment on this rumor.
