Rumor: China Mobile to Push Dual-, Quad-Core 3G Smartphones

C114, 6/17/13

According to an industry source, China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) is currently modifying its subsidy policy for TD-SCDMA terminals to focus less on single-core smartphones and more on dual- and quad-core smartphones starting in the second half of 2013.

In late-April of this year, China Mobile launched its Q2 2013 operator-customized handset tender in an effort to procure 500,000 units each of two different 5" quad-core handsets. In December 2012, China Mobile procured 4.7 mln smartphones, ranging from 3.5" single-core handsets to 4.5" quad-core handsets. Of these, 2.4 mln units were single-core handsets.
