MIIT Announces July 2013 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its January to July 2013 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the seven-month period were as follows:

Telecom operating revenues for Jan-July 2013 were RMB 762.67 bln (USD 124.42 bln), up 11.8% YoY, among which, core services revenue was RMB 664.53 bln (USD 108.41 bln), up 8.8% YoY. Broken down by mobile and fixed-line core service revenue, mobile telecom revenue was RMB 493.17 bln, up 10.2% YoY; and fixed-line telecom revenue was RMB 171.36 bln, up 4.8% YoY, of which broadband revenue was RMB 73.21 bln, up 8.5% YoY.

Of total telecom core services revenue, non-voice revenue was RMB 354.0 bln, up 16.5% YoY. Voice revenue was RMB 310.53 bln, up 1.1% YoY, of which mobile voice revenue was RMB 234.23 bln, up 2.4% YoY, and fixed-line voice revenue was RMB 28.79 bln, down 10.2% YoY. Mobile data and internet revenue was RMB 85.17 bln, up 55.8% YoY.

Year-to-date capital expenditure came to RMB 151.42 bln (USD 24.70 bln), a 10.3% year-on-year decrease.

Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 8.68 mln in July to reach 1.457 bln. Mobile subscribers grew by 9.37 mln to 1.185 bln, while fixed-line subscribers decreased by 693,000 to 272.22 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscriber base declined by 457,000 to 262.07 mln, while the PHS subscriber base decreased by 236,000 subs to 10.15 mln. In July, 14.87 mln new 3G subscribers were added to reach a total 3G user base of 333.74 mln.

A total of 539.06 bln SMS messages were sent from January to July, a 2.8% increase YoY.

In terms of Internet access, China added 1.69 mln new registered broadband accounts in July to reach a total of 182.64 mln. FTTH subs grew to 31.60 mln, accounting for 17.3% of all broadband subs. Dial-up internet subs declined by 5,000 in July, reducing the total dial-up user base to 5.62 mln. Mobile Internet subscribers increased by 15.74 mln in July to reach a total of 820.22 mln.
