MIIT Announces September 2013 Telecom Statistics

China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has released its January to September 2013 telecom industry statistics. The figures for the nine-month period were as follows:

Telecom operating revenues for Jan-Sep 2013 were RMB 1.004 trln (USD 164.15 bln), up 12.1% YoY, among which, core services revenue was RMB 870.88 bln (USD 142.30 bln), up 8.6% YoY. Broken down by mobile and fixed-line core service revenue, mobile telecom revenue was RMB 651.12 bln, up 10.1% YoY; and fixed-line telecom revenue was RMB 219.76 bln, up 4.3% YoY, of which broadband revenue was RMB 94.54 bln, up 8.6% YoY.

Of total telecom core services revenue, non-voice revenue was RMB 463.78 bln, up 16.6% YoY. Voice revenue was RMB 407.09 bln, up 0.7% YoY. Mobile data and internet revenue was RMB 139.57 bln, up 55.2% YoY.

Year-to-date capital expenditure came to RMB 207.78 bln (USD 33.95 bln), a 7.8% YoY decrease.

Total telephone subscribers saw a net increase of 10.00 mln in September to reach 1.477 bln. Mobile subscribers grew by 10.94 mln to 1.207 bln, while fixed-line subscribers decreased by 936,000 to 270.40 mln. Broken down by traditional fixed-line and PHS, the traditional (i.e. non-PHS) fixed-line subscriber base declined by 457,000 to 262.07 mln, while the PHS subscriber base decreased by 189,000 subs to 9.72 mln. In September, 16.31 mln new 3G subscribers were added to reach a total 3G user base of 367.60 mln.

A total of 697.04 bln SMS messages were sent from January to September, a 3.0% increase YoY.

In terms of Internet access, China added 1.70 mln new registered broadband accounts in September to reach a total of 185.81 mln, of which 4M+ broadband subs rose to 140.10 mln, accounting for 75.4% of all broadband subs, and FTTH subs grew to 35.19 mln, accounting for 18.9% of all broadband subs. Dial-up internet subs declined by 4,000 in September, reducing the total dial-up user base to 5.61 mln. Mobile Internet subscribers decreased by 8.26 mln in September, to reach a total of 819.54 mln.
