Uber to Accept Alipay Payments Globally

Uber, 5/03/16

American ridesharing firm Uber has announced that it will accept payments through Chinese third-party payment platform Alipay in all 400 cities globally in which Uber operates. Users will now be able to use their Alipay accounts to pay for rides via the Uber app, or can order rides and make payments directly via the Alipay app.

Alipay, operated by Alibaba Group's (NYSE: BABA) financial services affiliate Ant Financial, was added as a payment option for Uber in the mainland China market in 2014. In early 2016, Uber also began accepting payment via Alipay for rides in Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan.

Editor's Note: As of mid-April this year, Uber was operating in 47 cities in mainland China. For more information on this topic, please see "Uber to Accept Alipay Payments for Rides Outside of China," MD 2/01/16 issue.
