WeChat Launches Open Beta of Product Barcode Scanning Function

Chinese internet and mobile services firm Tencent's (0700.HK) WeChat mobile messaging app has launched open beta testing for a new scanning feature in the app, according to an announcement on the company's official WeChat account.

Brand owners can enable the scanning feature for their product barcodes. When users scan the barcodes in WeChat, it will open the product's main page, which can contain options for bookmarking/sharing the product, product information and price, photos or video of the product, an option to follow the brand's official WeChat account, or recommendations for related products. Brand owners will also be able to issue rebates or rewards points to users who scan the barcode.

Currently, when users scan a product barcode which has not activated the new feature, WeChat opens a page with data drawn from the Article Number Center of China and a number of e-commerce platforms.

Interested merchants must have a verified official account on WeChat, own the rights to the product brand, and use a barcode legally registered in China (which begins with 69).

Open beta testing currently covers 14 product categories, including food and beverage, maternity and infant, healthcare, and beauty products.
