Rumor: NDRC Considering Splitting Up China Mobile

Communications Information News, 11/15/07

Chairman of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) Li Rongrong has said that competition within the telecommunications industry is now similar to the situation before China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) was broken up. This appears to be hinting at a break up of China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK).

Rumors have been circulating for some time that China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) may be split. However, it may be more reasonable to split up China Mobile, and more likely to address the worsening imbalance in the industry. Given the State-Owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC)'s goals for the structure of competition in the industry, it seems that a break of China Mobile may be under consideration by government policy-makers.
