iPhone China Market Entry Faces Obstacles

Sohu IT, 11/15/07

A telecoms executive has told Reuters the media is exaggerating the chances of Apple and China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) cooperating to bring the iPhone to China.

In China, SIM cards cannot be tied to phones as they are with the iPhone, nor has China Mobile ever split income with a phone manufacturer.

Analyst with US firm Gartner, Sandy Shen, indicated that the iPhone's price point is high for Chinese consumers, and that China Mobile will stick to its long-standing policy of not sharing income with manufacturers.

In the US, Apple operates the popular iTunes music download service, but iPhone users in China may find a lack of suitable content and applications for their devices.
