MII Details Rural Informatization Measures

Xinhuanet, 11/23/07

Xi Guohua, Vice-Minister for the Information Industry, has indicated that programs to bring telephony and broadband Internet to Chinese villages are only a first step in connecting remote areas - the next stage is to provide information on government services, agricultural technology, weather reports and employment opportunities. Tariff cuts will be implemented first in rural areas, and oversight will be bolstered to deal with services and charges that work against the interests of rural residents.

Xi revealed that 99.5% of administrative villages are now connected to the television network, along with 90% of villages of twenty or more households. Four provinces have provided telephone access to all villages of this size.
