China Mobile Staff Warm to TD-SCDMA

Sohu IT, 12/07/07

Recently, an employee of China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) stated to Sohu that a large number of China Mobile employees have shifted opinion in favor of operating a TD-SCDMA network.

The 3 main reasons for this included: doing so will increase China Mobile's standing in the eyes of various ministries, which in turn will create more favorable conditions for future operations; GPRS voice + EDGE will be sufficient to meet high end users' need for the next 1-2 years, during which time the TD-SCDMA industry chain will continue to mature, allowing for a smooth transition; and fierce opposition from Europe to the US's aggressive push for WiMAX to become a 3G standard means that TD-SCDMA has good potential to become the standard in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Previously, China Mobile employees had shown resentment towards operating the TD-SCDMA network, mostly because they believed that the immature TD-SCDMA industry chain was a drag on the company's performance.
