China Mobile Exploring Fixed-Line Business

Sina Tech, 1/15/08

According to a China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) executive, the company has explored the possibility of operating fixed-line services.

With fixed-line operators running WCDMA trials, China Mobile is thought to be moving towards fixed-line business. Fixed-line operators have complained of China Mobile "building its own fixed-line and local-area networks, providing public telephones, renting and selling network elements, and providing non-corporate customers with VPN services." China Mobile's provision of public telephone services led the Ministry of Information Industry (MII) to issue an order to cease and desist, with China Mobile now saying it is complying with MII wishes until a fixed-line license is issued.
