Shanghai to Regulate SNS from 2009

Xinhuanet, 1/16/08

Wang Weiming, vice president of Shanghai Marriage Introduction Management Association, recently announced that from 2009 his organization plans to introduce new rules more tightly regulating both offline and online marriage introduction services. Wang explained that while many social networking websites claim to provide a 'friend-finding platform', many are actually providing marriage introduction services. Due to a lack of formal regulations governing the space, some con artists have used the sites as platforms for taking advantage of users. Therefore, in 2009 the association will start making standards for the national marriage introduction industry, and will include online social networking services under the regulations.
