China Mobile: Official Talks on iPhone Not Yet Started

Caijing, 1/24/08

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) president Wang Jianzhou said at the Davos World Economic Forum on January 23 that the company had not yet begun talks with Apple on bringing the iPhone to China. "We are absolutely open to any mobile phone that our users like," Wang said. He made no comment as to whether or not China Mobile would be open to the kind of revenue-sharing model that Apple's partnerships with other carriers have been based upon.

On January 15, Steve Jobs replied to the rumor that China Mobile had already cut off talks with Apple by saying that the companies had not begun talks. A spokesperson for Apple China said that an Apple vice-president had come to China for preliminary talks with industry leaders including China Mobile.
