Rumor: Telecom Operators Prepare for Restructuring

Tencent Tech, 2/18/08

According to industry sources, operators are currently making internal preparations for the upcoming industry shake-up.

China Mobile (NYSE: CHL; 0941.HK) has started counting staff members in provincial branches who use China Tietong fixed lines; China Telecom (NYSE: CHA; 0728.HK) has also started counting employees who use CDMA network handsets. According to analysts, the operators are likely to standardize fixed line and mobile usage once the restructuring takes place.

It is also rumored that China Unicom (NYSE: CHU; 0762.HK; 600050.SH) is calculating how many of its employees use GSM or CDMA phones, with some CDMA users requesting to switch to GSM.
