TD-MBMS Angles to Become Mobile Phone TV Standard

Shanghai Securities News, 2/26/08

According to one industry insider, the China Communications Standards Association has circulated two reports on a TD-SCDMA industry standard to companies working in related fields; the reports detail the technical requirements and wireless access subsystem hardware requirements for the "2 GHz TD-SCDMA Digital Honeycombed Mobile Communications Network Multimedia Broadcasting System (TD-MBMS)." This is a sign that TD-SCDMA has reached a stage where an industry standard for mobile TV can be declared.

One manufacturer revealed that the 6 companies involved in outdoor TD-SCDMA handset testing in Qinhuangdao all reported normal operations and fluid video broadcasts. The first version of TD-MBMS from Datang, ZTE (0763.HK; 000063.SZ) and Putian is already complete, in time to be used during the Olympics. MBMS can be implemented on the same carrier waves as 3G networks, and support for mobile video broadcasting can be implemented through a simple software upgrade, without any need for changes to the hardware platform. The CCSA is currently actively engaged in research on the second version of TD-MBMS.
