DAB-based Mobile Phone TV Gains Traction

CCID, 3/12/08

Beijing Jolon Digital Media Broadcasting GM Qin Xuegang has revealed that there are currently already more than 10 different handsets (and many consumer electronics products) supporting DAB-format mobile television on sale in more than 400 mobile phone retail outlets. By Chinese New Year of this year, Qin said, the number of mobile TV viewers in Beijing broke 100,000. Jolon currently broadcasts 6 mobile television programs and 16 DAB channels in Beijing, and hopes to reach 500,000 users by the time the Olympics begin in Beijing this summer.

Because mobile operators in Beijing, Guangdong, and Shanghai use a single mobile television standard, DAB handsets can be used to watch mobile programming in all three cities. A spokesperson for , (GTM-M) said that 7 mobile programs are already being broadcast in Guangdong, and that mobile television coverage includes Guangzhou, Foshan, Zhongshan, Dongguan, Shunde and Zhuhai.

As part of an activity in Guangzhou, users who buy an Elitek or Obee mobile phone (for RMB 1480 - 1600) will receive a free RMB 328 mobile television charge card allowing them to receive free mobile TV for a year. The company has also raised money to solicit bids from Shenzhen handset manufacturers for 300,000 mobile television-enabled handsets, which are expected to hit the market in May. Currently there are 50,000-60,000 mobile television users in Guangdong, a figure that is hoped to increase to more than 200,000 by the end of the year.
