Shanghai Reports Robust IPTV Growth

Netease Tech, 3/18/08

Shanghai Telecom's IPTV promotion launched in mid-January has been successful, with as many as two or three thousand new subscribers signing up a day between Chinese New Year and now, with 30,000 new subscribers over the last month. Shanghai Telecom's Internet and VAS official Yang Bingfeng added that he is confident that total user numbers will reach 800,000 in 2008.

Figures from BesTV show that the average IPTV subscriber watches IPTV for four to five hours per day - up from one to two hours per day when IPTV started two years ago. Switch-on rates in Shanghai are up from the initial 30% to 65%, with VOD and playback functions most popular and accounting for 70% of IPTV watching time. However, some users complain of slow start-up and complicated menus.
